Gesture Teaching
Motion Design
In Radar, there are a number of gestures users can do to accomplish tasks. Look left, look right, tap and hold, look up, look down, tilt your head left, tilt it right, shake your head, nod your head, double tap, and single tap.
Creators had the option to include all or none. Before beginning an experience, it became clear that users should be told what gestures are contained within. So we attached the appropriate gesture animations and gave users confirmation when they successfully completed the gesture.
With the experiences themselves being rather complex and foreign to users, I wanted the instructions to be as simple and clear as possible. At first I had the arrows in as placeholders, thinking something more robust was needed, but after testing internally, we realized nothing more was needed. The simplicity of the interface guarded against potentially confusing instructions by the creator.
