The Big Pine

Blog Concept, Writing, & Design

I had a typical suburban childhood, growing up obsessed with and playing all sports. All was well and good until that trajectory exploded on impact with what was an impenetrable wall named Minor Threat. I’d never heard anything like them, and I needed more. My friends that hit that same wall and I then sought out other like minded youths. What we found was a flourishing underground hardcore scene in the Merrimack Valley and our lives were never the same.

I needed to disassociate myself from being a “jock” and embrace this new, real, different, creative outlet. All music. No sports.

Now, mature and honest, I’ve realized there’s room to be connected to and obsessed with both music and sports. The Big Pine was a Tumblr blog I started essentially as an outlet for me to write more about them, focusing on the early-to-mid 90s versions of each.

Anyways, it was a really fun project that I haven’t touched in a long time. I still occasionally try think of how I can do something more with it. Perhaps updating it and turning it into a zine or something.

BEGINNINGS.

Items like this—the first flyer I made for my band’s first real show—were the impetus for the blog. Pieces of my past that are just soaking in nostalgia and instantly bring my back to being 15.

Making flyers for shows were what got me hooked on design, and this sucker in it’s cut-and-paste glory kick started that train.
